Toronto is set to introduce a new affordable housing lottery system aimed at helping those who have been on the waiting list for the longest time. This initiative comes amid increasing demand for subsidized housing, as the city's waiting list has grown significantly, now exceeding 92,000 applicants.
The new lottery system, scheduled to launch in mid to late 2025, will prioritize applicants based on their waiting duration while also incorporating a randomized selection process. This hybrid approach aims to balance the needs of both longterm waitlisted individuals and those in urgent need of housing.
Currently, applicants sign up during a designated expression of interest period, after which names are randomized for selection. The upcoming changes will ensure that half the available units will be allocated through the lottery, while the other half will be reserved for those who have waited the longest. This means newcomers and those with changing financial situations will also have a fair chance at securing housing.
Additionally, the city plans to centralize affordable housing opportunities, providing a single portal for applicants to maintain eligibility and access available options. According to Doug Rollins, director of housing stability services, this modernization aims to create a more seamless experience for those seeking affordable housing in Toronto.
