Prince George Humane Society pauses cat intake amid overcrowding

The Prince George Humane Society has temporarily stopped accepting cats after taking in 216 cats and kittens in the past two months, according to the City of Prince George and shelter officials. Executive director Angela McLaren said the shelter has been seeing more freeroaming house cats brought in as the weather improves and pet owners let animals outdoors more often. She said that has filled shelter space and made it harder to take in stray cats that may truly need help. The humane society is now trying to move animals to other shelters and rescue groups, while also expanding foster homes and promoting adoptions. City bylaw officials said frequent cat trapping calls can create complications, especially when traps are set without following local rules. McLaren urged pet owners to keep cats indoors when possible, use collars and identification tags, and have pets spayed or neutered to reduce the number of animals ending up in shelters.
