Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook says signing a fouryear contract extension gives him stability as he prepares for his sixth full NHL season. The St. John’s native, who recently agreed to a US$22.2 million deal, spoke ahead of the team’s first preseason game about why he chose to stay with Montreal. Newhook said the Canadiens’ roster, the organization, and the city all played a role in his decision. He added that he sees the coming years as a chance for the team to compete for a Stanley Cup and said he did not want to miss that opportunity. The 25yearold also reflected on his connection to Newfoundland and Labrador, saying he feels pride from fans back home and hopes to build on last season’s playoff success.
