B.C. man who pulled over drivers with fake police lights gets conditional discharge
North Vancouver man gets discharge for fake RCMP stop on Highway 1 See how court ruled after police-style lights fooled drivers and sparked complaints
A North Vancouver man who admitted to using fake policestyle lights to stop drivers on Highway 1 has received an 18month conditional discharge, meaning he can avoid a criminal record if he completes his probation terms.
Court heard Wayne Peter Church, 59, presented himself as an RCMP officer and pulled over motorists between January and March of last year while driving a truck fitted with flashing emergency lights and while wearing a highvisibility vest. He pleaded guilty to using equipment likely to make the public believe he was a peace officer.
Prosecutors said the conduct came to light after Church himself called 911 about an erratic driver. Police later found light bars and other gear in his truck, and additional drivers came forward after the RCMP issued a public notice. His sentence includes 15 hours of community service and a ban on possessing aftermarket vehicle lights used by law enforcement.
