Supreme Court takes up abortion pill access dispute
Mifepristone access faces Supreme Court review after a 5th Circuit ruling Doctors and patients await a fast decision as mail-order limits take effect
The Supreme Court is now being asked to intervene in a legal fight over access to the abortion pill mifepristone after a federal appeals court ruling changed how the drug can be distributed.
Danco Laboratories, the maker of mifepristone, told the justices that the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision has created confusion for doctors, pharmacies, and patients. The company argues that the ruling, which blocks mailorder access and restores inperson requirements, is disrupting medical care and leaving providers unsure how to comply.
The emergency request was sent to Justice Samuel Alito, who oversees requests from the 5th Circuit. The Supreme Court could act quickly, either by temporarily pausing the ruling or by letting the restrictions remain in place while the case continues in lower courts.
