Quebec Liberals outline plan for French language support
Quebec Liberal Party French plan promises support, training and culture over bans Milliard says the approach will boost francophone appeal before the Oct. 5 vote
The Quebec Liberal Party has presented a Frenchlanguage plan ahead of the next provincial election, saying it wants to take a more positive approach if elected. Leader Charles Milliard said the party aims to promote French through support and outreach rather than relying mainly on restrictions.
At a news conference in Montreal’s Verdun borough, Milliard said recent efforts to strengthen French have focused too much on prohibition and pressure. The Liberals’ plan includes $380 million in spending over four years, faster francisation training, more support for literacy programs, and greater investment in Francophone culture and Frenchlanguage content.
The announcement comes as the party works to improve its standing with francophone voters, while recent polls show it trailing the Parti Québécois and the Coalition Avenir Québec. The Quebec election is scheduled for Oct. 5.
