Group blames speed camera removal for rise in speeding on Toronto road
Parkside Drive speeding data shows a sharp spike after Ontario banned speed cameras See why Safe Parkside says the road now needs redesigns, not just warnings
A Toronto advocacy group says new city data suggests speeding has increased sharply on Parkside Drive since automated speed cameras were banned in Ontario.
Safe Parkside said figures from lightup speed signs showed 3,675 vehicles were recorded travelling at 60 km/h or higher on the road in July, up from 556 in the same month a year earlier. The road’s speed limit is 40 km/h.
The group linked the change to the province’s decision last fall to ban speed cameras. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the road should instead be redesigned with measures such as roundabouts and speed bumps. A provincial spokesperson said Toronto has not yet applied for additional funding to support those changes.
