B.C. Port Expansion Raises Longstanding Security Concerns
Delta port expansion fast-tracking faces security concerns and trade gains Roberts Bank Terminal 2 could boost capacity 50%—but officials want safer ports
A major port expansion in Delta, British Columbia, has been referred to the federal major projects office for possible fasttracking, but local officials say longstanding security problems still need attention.
The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project would add three berths, increase container capacity by 50 per cent, and is expected by supporters to expand trade capacity and contribute to Canada’s economy. Federal officials say the expansion is meant to help diversify trade beyond the United States.
Delta Mayor George Harvie and former RCMP deputy commissioner Peter German said the port’s security system has not kept pace with comparable ports overseas. They pointed to concerns about drug trafficking, limited police presence inside ports, and the need for better screening technology. Federal Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said port expansion and security are separate issues, while adding that the government continues to work on evolving security challenges.
