E. Jean Carroll seeks release of nearly $5.8 million after Trump appeal loss

E. Jean Carroll is asking a Manhattan federal court to release nearly $5.8 million tied to a civil jury award against Donald Trump, after the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in the case. In a filing Tuesday night, Carroll’s lawyers said Trump is seeking another delay while considering whether to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its refusal to take the case. Carroll’s legal team argues there is no practical reason to keep the money on hold, and says she has already accepted several prior delays. The underlying jury verdict found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll. The award includes money deposited by Trump to secure the judgment during appeals, along with interest that has accumulated while the funds were held by the court. Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered Trump’s lawyers to respond to Carroll’s motion by next Tuesday. The dispute comes as Trump continues to face separate legal liability in another Carroll defamation case that resulted in a larger jury award.
