Montreal arena renamed Aréna des Patineuses to honour women’s sports
Aréna des Patineuses reopens in Montreal’s Mile End with major upgrades New accessibility, refrigeration and a fresh name honor women in sport
A community arena in Montreal’s PlateauMontRoyal borough is reopening next week after renovations that began in 2024, and it now has a new name: Aréna des Patineuses.
The former Aréna SaintLouis, in the Mile End, was renamed by borough mayor Cathy Wong as a way to recognize women athletes, coaches, referees and volunteers who use the facility. Wong said the arena has long been a key venue for sports such as figure skating, women’s hockey, ringette and roller derby.
The upgrades included a roof replacement, a new refrigeration system, accessibility improvements and a redesigned layout. The arena is scheduled to reopen on Sept. 8 with dropin hockey and skating available to residents, and an official inauguration is planned for Oct. 18.
