GTA environmental group nears 10 million litter pickups
Toronto cleanup milestone nears as A Greener Future nears 10 million litter pieces See how volunteers, students and families help track waste and protect the lakeshore
A Greater Toronto Area environmental nonprofit is approaching a major cleanup milestone after collecting nearly 10 million pieces of litter since 2014.
On Friday, volunteers gathered at Amos Waites Park in Toronto for a lakeshore cleanup organized by A Greener Future. The group said the event added 3,441 pieces of litter to its tally and reflected the work it carries out across communities from Oshawa to Hamilton.
Organizers said the cleanups bring together students, families, businesses and visiting groups such as Cirque du Soleil, and that the data they collect helps track common waste types and may support future policy discussions. They said plastic fragments, packaging and cigarette butts remain among the most common items found.
