Toronto intersection reconfigured to prioritize cyclists and pedestrians
Toronto intersection redesign boosts safety for pedestrians and cyclists downtown See how the new layout eases traffic, adds bike links and opens public space
Toronto has redesigned the Wellington and Portland streets intersection in the downtown core as part of a longer effort to improve cycling infrastructure and public space.
The city says the new layout is intended to make the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists by reducing conflict points for people moving through the intersection. Drivers are now redirected around the middle of the crossing, while the centre area has been opened for walking, sitting and cyclingrelated use.
The project also adds features such as planters, seating and a new twoway protected bike lane on Portland Street, linking riders more easily to nearby bike routes. City officials say the changes are meant to improve safety first, while also helping manage congestion as more people are encouraged to travel by bike or transit.
