Toronto Maple Leafs add Mats Sundin and John Chayka to reshape hockey ops New leadership aims to restore playoff success and win back Toronto fans
The Toronto Maple Leafs have added former captain Mats Sundin as senior executive adviser of hockey operations and John Chayka as general manager, the team announced Monday in Toronto.
The changes come after a disappointing season in which the Maple Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president Keith Pelley said the organization believes the new leadership can help guide the team in a better direction.
Sundin, who played 13 seasons in Toronto and remains one of the franchise’s most accomplished players, said he is excited to help build a winning team. Chayka, who previously served as the Arizona Coyotes’ general manager, said he understands the expectations in Toronto and is focused on helping construct a team worthy of the fans’ patience.
