Media were given a tour of 24 Sussex Drive after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a national fundraising campaign to help renovate the official residence in Ottawa.
The building has been vacant for more than a decade and is now in poor condition, with visible damage from asbestos, lead, mould, rodents, water damage and agerelated wear. Parts of the interior have been gutted, while some rooms are being used for storage.
Carney said the refurbishment plan will be chosen through a designandbuild competition open to Canadian firms, with the winning proposal expected to be announced by Canada Day next year.
