Severe winds swept through southern Manitoba late Wednesday, downing trees and causing widespread power outages across the region. In some areas, wind gusts reached 133 km/h, while Winnipeg and nearby communities also saw thousands of lightning strikes overnight.
Manitoba Hydro said about 28,000 customers were without power by Thursday midday, with many outages concentrated in Winnipeg’s south end and surrounding communities. Crews were assessing damage from fallen trees, damaged poles, and equipment impacted by fire, but no restoration timeline had been given.
Residents and arborists described significant property damage, especially in areas south of Winnipeg such as Prairie Grove, St. Norbert, Fort Richmond, and La Salle. Environment and Climate Change Canada said hot, humid conditions helped fuel the storm system.
