Spirit Airlines begins winding down after collapse
Spirit Airlines shutdown follows bankruptcy, ending service amid mounting costs and debt. See how the $217M wind-down affects passengers, employees, and rebooking options.
Spirit Airlines has started the process of shutting down its business after filing for bankruptcy court proceedings in White Plains, New York. The carrier said the winddown could cost about $217 million and may continue through early 2028.
The airline closed operations over the weekend after years of financial pressure, including high debt, rising expenses, and a sharp increase in jet fuel costs. Court filings and testimony said the fuel spike added about $100 million in extra costs in March and April.
The shutdown has affected tens of thousands of passengers and about 17,000 direct and indirect employees. Other airlines have been helping stranded travelers rebook after Spirit stopped flying at 3 a.m. ET on Saturday.
