BC wildfire crews prepare for hot weather and possible new fires
BC wildfire update: crews brace for heat as Kimberley's Bootleg Complex holds See how firefighters, alerts, and smoke conditions could affect your area this week
BC Wildfire Service crews are preparing for a period of intense heat this week as conditions across the province are expected to become warmer and drier.
An incident commander said firefighters near Kimberley are being supported by additional resources as they work on the Bootleg Complex, which includes seven fires and has led to evacuation alerts in the city. Officials said the fires have grown only slightly in recent days, helped by firefighting efforts and weather conditions.
The service warned that higher temperatures, limited rain and low streamflows could increase the risk of new fire starts. Environment Canada has also expanded heat warnings and issued air quality advisories in many parts of British Columbia because of smoke from more than 80 wildfires burning across the province.
