Canadian boxing icon George Chuvalo dies at 89
George Chuvalo obituary: Canada’s legendary heavyweight boxer dies at 89 Remember the Ali rival, unbeaten fighter and advocate who inspired generations
George Chuvalo, one of Canada’s bestknown heavyweight boxers and a twotime opponent of Muhammad Ali, has died on his 89th birthday, according to his Toronto gym.
Chuvalo built a long professional career from 1956 to 1978, won the Canadian heavyweight title multiple times, and became famous for never being knocked down in a pro fight. He was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world and finished with a record of 73 wins, 18 losses and two draws.
His two fights with Ali helped define his legacy. The first, in Toronto in 1966, went the distance and turned Chuvalo into a symbol of toughness and determination. He later lost a rematch to Ali in Vancouver in 1972. Outside the ring, Chuvalo also spoke openly about the loss of family members to drugs and suicide, and later visited schools across Canada to warn young people about addiction.
