D Dutchmen Dairy fire devastates Sicamous farm after overnight blaze About 40 calves died as the family assesses losses and the shop stays closed

A fire overnight at D Dutchmen Dairy in Sicamous, B.C., destroyed three farm structures and killed about 40 calves, according to the family that runs the wellknown roadside dairy and ice cream shop. The blaze began around 1 a.m. PT on Thursday and spread through old wooden barns on the property. The shop itself was not damaged, but it remains closed while the family assesses the losses and next steps. Firefighters were able to save the milking parlour and cow section, and one cow was rescued from the fire. The family said the animals were treated like pets and each calf had a name. Sicamous Mayor Colleen Anderson described the business as an important community fixture, while local business leaders said residents are rallying around the Dewitt family. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the farm is asking people to stay away for now.
