Ontario's police watchdog says a 26yearold man was seriously injured after officers fired a beanbag round from a lesslethal shotgun at a Toronto hospital on Sunday morning.
According to the Special Investigations Unit, police were called to Centenary Hospital in Toronto's east end around 10:30 a.m. after reports that the man was carrying a sharpedged weapon. Investigators say officers negotiated with him before one officer fired the round.
The SIU said the man was taken to hospital with serious but nonlifethreatening injuries. The agency also noted that it still investigates police actions that cause serious injury, death, or sexual assault, even though some lesslethal rounds are no longer treated the same way under recent provincial regulations.
