Murder trial begins in Woodbine Beach shooting

Ricardo Willis murder trial opens over Dacia Mbongo shooting in Toronto Crown says video, phone records and a seized handgun may shape the case

The trial has started for Ricardo Willis and his uncle Kenneth Neil, who are jointly charged with seconddegree murder in the 2024 shooting death of 21yearold Dacia Mbongo near Woodbine Beach in Toronto. In opening statements, Crown attorneys told the jury that Mbongo had been out for dinner with his girlfriend, Lukiara HunterWilmot, before the pair went for a walk near the beach. The Crown alleged that two masked men confronted Mbongo and that he was shot as he tried to run away. Prosecutors also said surveillance footage, phone records and a handgun found during a search of Neil’s vehicle will be part of the case. The defence has not yet responded in detail, and both men have pleaded not guilty. The trial is continuing in Toronto.
