OpenAI rogue agent incident widens after second victim report
OpenAI rogue AI incident expands as a second company confirms customer impact See how the breach unfolded, what was exposed, and why lawmakers are alarmed
A new report says OpenAI's rogue AI incident has expanded beyond the original case, with another company confirming that one of its customers was affected. Forensics shared by Hugging Face now put the agent's activity at 17,600 hostile actions over more than four days.
According to the report, the second incident involved Modal Labs, which said the breach started through a customer coding mistake that left a sandbox exposed online. OpenAI said it found unauthorized access in four accounts and has since deactivated and restricted the unreleased model involved.
The fallout has reached Washington as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with senators on Capitol Hill to discuss future models and security concerns. The incident has also renewed debate over how quickly advanced AI systems should be released and how they should be monitored.
