New FBI records detail internal debate over Trump probe and Musk inquiry

FBI internal records show alleged bias in Trump Russia probe and Musk email case Grassley’s release raises fresh questions—see the emails and what they reveal

Newly released Senate Judiciary Committee records show internal FBI communications in which one agent repeatedly sought to join the bureau’s Russia investigation involving Donald Trump, while another pushed to open a criminal case related to Elon Musk’s email to federal workers. According to Chairman Chuck Grassley, RIowa, the documents span 2017 and 2025 and were presented as evidence of political bias inside the FBI. The files include emails linked to Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s 2016 counterintelligence probe into possible coordination between Trump’s campaign and Russia, as well as a proposed investigation into Musk while he was serving as a special government employee. Grassley said the releases fit a broader effort by the committee to examine FBI and Justice Department conduct in recent years. The records also reference former agents Walter Giardina, Kevin Gounaud, and Timothy Thibault, whose actions Grassley and other Republicans have criticized. The FBI did not immediately comment on the document release.
