Waltz backs UN resolution on Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz

Strait of Hormuz resolution targets Iran's threats to shipping and global trade See how the U.S. plan aims to secure sea lanes and protect civilian mariners

The United States is seeking a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at Iran's activity in the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington expands efforts to protect commercial shipping in the vital waterway. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz said the proposal, being developed with Bahrain and Gulf Cooperation Council states, would hold Iran accountable for laying sea mines, threatening international navigation and disrupting global trade. He said the measure is separate from, but connected to, the U.S. maritime operation known as Project Freedom. Waltz argued that Iran should not be able to use the strait to pressure other countries or turn a shipping lane into a weapon. He also said the plan is meant to support safe passage for civilian mariners and help preserve humanitarian aid routes that rely on stable sea lanes.
