Toronto opens $12.5M command centre for World Cup security
Toronto World Cup command centre unites agencies for real-time security response See how Toronto will track crowds, traffic and threats during major events
Toronto officials have opened a new $12.5million police command centre that will serve as the hub for security planning during FIFA World Cup matches in the city.
The facility, called the Toronto Integrated Safety and Security Unit Area Command Centre, will bring police, fire, paramedics, health partners and other agencies together in one location to coordinate responses in real time. Officials said the centre will use drone video, traffic cameras and other feeds to monitor crowd movement and traffic conditions.
Police said the command centre will be tested this weekend during a Toronto FC match against Inter Miami and is scheduled to go into full use on June 6 for the duration of the tournament. City officials also said it may be used afterward for other major events, including Caribana and Pride Toronto.
