EU chief to visit Greenland as Trump renews control push
EU support for Greenland gains momentum as von der Leyen heads to Nuuk New funding and Arctic cooperation could boost security, minerals, and influence
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to travel to Greenland’s capital on Sunday, where she is expected to signal stronger EU support for the selfgoverning Danish territory amid renewed pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The visit is likely to include fresh funding for Greenland and comes as Brussels looks to expand cooperation on security, infrastructure and critical minerals. Von der Leyen will travel with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
Analysts say the trip also reflects wider concerns about Arctic geopolitics, including tensions involving Russia and China, as well as the strategic importance of the GreenlandIcelandU.K. corridor. EU officials have already expanded their presence in Nuuk and are seeking a more defined role in what some describe as Europe’s “northern neighborhood.”
