Trump-Xi summit could create risks for Canada, says Michael Kovrig

Trump-Xi summit highlights symbolism over substance and could pressure Canada Kovrig warns of trade fallout as U.S.-China talks may sideline Canadian interests

Analyst Michael Kovrig says U.S. President Donald Trump’s White House meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was heavy on symbolism but light on policy. He argues the summit mainly served to project strength and status for both leaders, while producing little of real substance. Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat and now senior Asia adviser at the International Crisis Group, said the meeting could still affect Canada. He warned that any U.S.China deal could leave Canada exposed if Washington and Beijing cut agreements that overlook Canadian interests or create new trade and diplomatic pressures. He also pointed to broader concerns about China’s treatment of foreign citizens, including his own past detention, and said Canada should work with allies to push Beijing to end such practices. The interview aired on CBC Radio’s As It Happens on September 25, 2026.
