Deadly crash closes Sea to Sky Highway for hours

Police are investigating a fatal collision that shut down the Sea to Sky Highway in both directions for several hours on Sunday. According to the BC RCMP, a Highway Patrol officer was doing speed enforcement near the Deeks Creek Bridge, south of Porteau Cove, around 5:30 p.m. when two motorcyclists were seen speeding and driving erratically. The officer followed them and soon found one of the riders had collided with a recreational vehicle. The motorcyclist, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. BC Emergency Health Services sent two ambulances and an air ambulance, but no one was transported to hospital. The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia because a police officer was involved. Highway patrol is asking witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage from between Britannia Beach and the crash site to come forward. The highway reopened around 2 a.m. Monday.
