Ontario Provincial Police are warning people in Ontario who recently bought a new cellphone about a fraud scheme that uses fake followup calls.
According to police, scammers contact victims soon after a phone purchase and ask them to return the device, claiming it is needed to finish setup or to apply a promotion or discount. Victims who agree may mail the phone or hand it to someone for pickup, but the device is not returned.
The OPP says people should be cautious about unsolicited calls, emails, and text messages, and should verify any promotion or service request directly with their mobile provider before taking action.
