Châteauguay study finds residents are shopping and dining elsewhere

Châteauguay commercial leakage study shows residents spend $332.3M elsewhere City leaders respond with local shopping boosts and better options to win them back

A new citycommissioned study says many Châteauguay residents are spending their money in nearby communities because they are unhappy with local shopping and restaurant options. The report, prepared by Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton, estimates about $332.3 million in annual commercial leakage. The survey, which included nearly 600 residents and business owners in 2025, found that more than half of respondents were dissatisfied with the city’s commercial offering. People cited limited variety, unappealing storefronts and a shortage of options in areas such as home goods, fashion, sporting goods, gyms and fullservice restaurants. Mayor Éric Allard said the findings confirm concerns residents have raised for years and are now helping guide the city’s response. Châteauguay has hired staff to support local shopping efforts and build stronger ties with businesses, while local business leaders say the city also needs to adapt to online shopping habits and encourage residents to explore what is already available.
