Ontario businesses react to new U.S. tariffs and alcohol ban

Ontario tariffs pressure Canadian businesses as U.S. duties hit exports and alcohol sales See which sectors face the biggest risk—and where Ontario companies may find new growth

Ontario businesses are reacting to new U.S. tariffs and a ban on Canadian alcohol imports, which were announced by U.S. President Donald Trump as part of the latest escalation in the trade dispute between the two countries. Industry leaders said the measures could put pressure on Canadian producers, especially spirits makers and manufacturers that rely on U.S. sales. Spirits Canada said about half of Canada’s $2 billion annual spirits output is sold to the U.S., while a Torontoarea cookware company said the tariffs have sharply reduced its commercial sales south of the border. Some business groups said the disruption could also create opportunities for local industry. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce said businesses may benefit if they continue to strengthen domestic production and sales. Wine growers in Ontario also pointed to stronger local demand after earlier trade tensions led many buyers to switch away from U.S. products.
