Vancouver school support workers back strike mandate
Vancouver School Board strike vote follows 96.9% support over working conditions Union talks stalled; see what job action could mean for schools and staff
Support staff at the Vancouver School Board have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, according to their union.
The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 963 said 96.9% of members supported a strike mandate. The union represents about 900 workers, including building engineers, custodians, chefs, bakers, culinary assistants, food service workers and supervision aides.
Union officials said the dispute is focused on working conditions, job security and protection of trade qualifications rather than wages. The Vancouver School Board said it has contingency plans ready if job action goes ahead. Contract talks have been underway since October 2025, and the union says negotiations stalled last month when the board declined to hear a counteroffer.
