Gordie Howe bridge opening delayed after U.S. request, Carney says

Prime Minister Mark Carney said the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been delayed at the request of the United States while both sides work through unresolved issues. The WindsorDetroit Bridge Authority had already postponed Friday’s ribboncutting event. Carney said the delay gives Canada and the U.S. time to address technical concerns and other outstanding matters, and he said a short delay is acceptable for a bridge expected to serve both countries for decades. Canada’s minister for CanadaU.S. trade, Dominic LeBlanc, said there are a few remaining issues but expressed optimism they can be resolved soon. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said he is willing to wait if it helps secure a better trade outcome, while trucking industry leaders said the bridge could improve crossborder freight efficiency once it opens.
