Doctors warn of rising serious e-scooter injuries in children
E-scooter injuries in children are rising at Toronto’s SickKids See why doctors are urging stricter rules and safer streets
Doctors at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children say they are seeing a sharp increase in serious injuries from escooter crashes among children.
Physicians quoted in the report said cases have grown since 2024, with some children arriving with head, chest, spine, abdominal, and complex fracture injuries after highspeed crashes or collisions with vehicles. Several of the injuries have required surgery, intensive care, or long rehabilitation.
The article says the hospital has also seen more traumatic brain injuries, including skull fractures and bleeding in the brain. Doctors said privately owned escooters can travel faster than rental models, and they urged stronger public education, clearer rules, better enforcement, and safer infrastructure. One doctor also said children under 16 should not be riding them.
