Anthropic's AI biology lab makes its first discovery

AI biology discovery from Claude spots a new DNA system in viruses See how Anthropic’s agents found a CRISPR-like pattern and what it could mean

Anthropic said its AI biology lab has made its first discovery after Claude agents analyzed DNA data and identified an unfamiliar system inside bacteriainfecting viruses. The finding appears to involve a CRISPRlike repeating DNA pattern that may point to a new geneediting mechanism, although the function is not yet understood. According to Anthropic, the work was mainly carried out by Claude with human scientists guiding the research area and validating experiments. The company said it ran about 950 agents for less than a day before the model highlighted the unusual DNA structure. Anthropic also used the update to show how far its internal AI research tools have advanced. The company said Claude now leads a meaningful share of its research work, while full autonomy has not yet been reached. Anthropic plans to keep measuring and publishing these kinds of results as it studies how AI contributes to AI research.
