Trump approves new fuel economy standards, reversing Biden-era rules

Trump fuel economy standards ease CAFE rules for automakers and buyers Lower compliance costs, support U.S. carmakers, and see what changes next

President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he approved new fuel economy standards, reversing stricter rules set under former President Joe Biden. The policy change is intended to ease requirements on automakers and reduce support for electric vehicle adoption. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, rules have been updated over time since they were first introduced in 1975. Under Bidenera standards, automakers would have needed to raise the efficiency of passenger cars and light trucks to about 50 miles per gallon by 2031. Trump said the new standards would help lower costs for consumers and support U.S. car manufacturing, but the final rules have not yet been fully detailed. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has previously indicated the new requirements would be significantly lower than the Biden administration’s version.
