Ontario fines SeatGeek $25,000 over ticket resale law
Ontario ticket resale rules hit SeatGeek with a $25,000 fine over face-value sales See what the province alleges and how the case could reshape resale enforcement
Ontario has fined ticket resale platform SeatGeek $25,000 after alleging the company violated the province’s new rules against selling tickets above face value.
According to the province, the penalty was issued on Aug. 28 and SeatGeek did not appeal within the following two weeks. The government says the company failed to make sure tickets were not resold for more than their original price, did not always disclose face value, and allowed resale without proof of the original ticket price.
SeatGeek said in a statement that its concerns about the law remain, arguing that resale platforms often cannot access the original ticket price because that information is held by primary sellers such as Ticketmaster. The case comes as Ontario continues to enforce its ticket resale rules and consider further changes to how face value is defined and verified.
