Shell backs LNG Canada expansion to double capacity

LNG Canada expansion doubles Kitimat output to 28 million tons, boosting exports Tap into the full story on jobs, private capital, and Canada's push into Asia

A Shellled consortium has approved a major expansion of the LNG Canada project in Kitimat, British Columbia, doubling planned production capacity to about 28 million metric tons a year from 14 million. The decision supports Prime Minister Mark Carney’s goal of positioning Canada as a larger global energy exporter and reducing reliance on the U.S. market. Shell said the project is intended to help supply customers in Asia, where demand for LNG remains important amid ongoing shifts in global energy security. LNG Canada said the investment could support thousands of jobs and draw 33 billion Canadian dollars, or about $23.2 billion, in private capital. Commercial operations for the expanded project are expected to begin in the early 2030s.
