Five rescued after boat capsizes off Saturna Island
Boat rescue on Saturna Island: five passengers survive reef crash near Winter Cove See how speed and life jackets helped prevent injuries in the Canada Day weekend incident
Five people were rescued after their boat struck a reef and capsized near Winter Cove on Saturna Island in British Columbia on Monday evening.
According to the Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, speed was a factor in the incident. The passengers were able to put on life jackets after a person on a passing personal watercraft alerted them that the vessel was taking on water.
Rescue crews responded to the call around 6 p.m. PT, and the five people were found uninjured and did not need further help. Officials used the incident to remind boaters to wear life jackets and follow safety precautions on the water, especially during the Canada Day long weekend.
