A Montreal hospital is broadcasting complex eye surgeries live to give medical trainees and visiting doctors a clearer view of operating room procedures in real time. The livestreams are taking place at the Angus Centre for outpatient ophthalmic surgery at MaisonneuveRosemont Hospital, where Dr. Flavio Rezende recently performed several retinal operations for an audience in a downtown observation room. Specialists attending the American Society of Retina Specialists congress in Montreal were able to watch the procedures and ask questions as they happened. Doctors involved in the project say the format offers a more realistic learning experience than edited conference videos, since it shows surgical decisionmaking, challenging cases and the full pace of an operation.
