Metrolinx splits delayed Hazel McCallion LRT work into two contracts

Metrolinx has divided the remaining work on the Hazel McCallion LRT in Mississauga into two contracts as it tries to move the delayed project forward and settle ongoing commercial disputes. The provincial transit agency said the new arrangement keeps the same private consortium, Mobilinx, involved, but changes the structure of the deal. One contract will cover construction through an alliance model, while the other keeps the existing terms for operating and maintaining the line. The 18kilometre light rail project was originally expected to open in 2024, but it is now projected for completion in 2028, with testing and commissioning still to come. Metrolinx said it has already spent $3.5 billion of the estimated $5.5 billion project cost, not including operating expenses, and the government said the revised contracts will not raise the overall price.
