Ontario to begin removing some Toronto bike lanes

Toronto bike lane removal: Ford moves to reconfigure key roads and ease traffic See where changes start and what drivers, cyclists, and commuters can expect

The Ford government says it will start removing and reconfiguring bike lanes on several major Toronto roads after an Ontario Court of Appeal ruling allowed the province to proceed. According to the province, work will begin on sections of Bloor Street West, Yonge Street, University Avenue, Queen’s Park, Queen’s Park Crescent and Avenue Road. The government also says it has asked for proposals to study ways to restore vehicle lanes and consider whether bike lanes can be retained or redesigned. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the province believes restoring car lanes will help ease congestion, while critics, including Mayor Olivia Chow and cycling advocates, argue the plan could make roads less safe and worsen travel conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.
