Gordie Howe Bridge to host dignitary event before Monday opening

Gordie Howe International Bridge opens with a Friday event ahead of July 27 Windsor-Detroit link will soon welcome drivers, then cyclists and pedestrians

Local officials say they have been invited to a Friday morning event tied to the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which links Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said the bridge is expected to officially open on Monday, July 27, with pedestrian and bicycle access planned to begin on August 5. Former longtime NDP MP Brian Masse also said he received an invitation and expects to attend. The bridge has been the subject of years of political and construction debate, including earlier uncertainty over the opening timeline. The Canadian government said earlier this month that the crossing would open with U.S. support, after previous delays. Organizers have not released details about Friday’s event, and the WindsorDetroit Bridge Authority did not respond to requests for comment.
