Chetwynd apartment fire displaces nearly 50 residents after early-morning blaze Emergency lodging is underway as investigators assess damage and return timelines
Nearly 50 people are out of their homes after a fire at Hillside Manor apartments in Chetwynd, B.C., early Tuesday morning. Fire crews responded around 4 a.m. on Sept. 8, and officials said at least one unit was destroyed while several others were damaged.
The District of Chetwynd says about 46 residents are receiving emergency lodging and other support. No deaths or serious injuries were reported, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation and there is no timeline for when residents can return.
One resident described waking up to smoke and escaping through a window with help from firefighters. She said the fire spread quickly and that she lost her belongings, while her dog died from smoke inhalation and one cat remains missing. Officials said the building inspection is still ongoing and more than one apartment is now unliveable.
