FAA sets record for air traffic controller hiring in 2026
FAA air traffic controller hiring hits a record 2,235 in fiscal 2026 See how the agency is closing its staffing gap with faster training and upgrades
The Federal Aviation Administration hired 2,235 air traffic controller trainees in fiscal year 2026, setting a new agency record and slightly exceeding its target of 2,200, according to the Department of Transportation.
The FAA also reported 11,027 certified professional controllers at the end of the fiscal year, the highest level in 10 years. That is still below the agency’s estimated staffing target of 12,563 needed to meet forecast demand, leaving a shortfall of 1,536 controllers.
Transportation officials said the agency has reduced hiring timelines, expanded collegiate training programs, and retained some retirementeligible controllers through bonuses. The FAA is also continuing a broader modernization effort that includes new communications equipment, simulators, and other upgrades as it works through a threeyear workforce plan.
