Quebec earthquake rattles eastern regions with a 4.4 quake near Mont-Joli See where it was felt and what experts say about the St. Lawrence faults

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was felt Thursday morning across parts of eastern Quebec, including the BasSaintLaurent, Gaspésie and CôteNord regions. Earthquakes Canada said the epicentre was about 25 kilometres northeast of MontJoli in the St. Lawrence River, with the tremor occurring at 10:21 a.m. The shaking was reported as far away as RivièreduLoup, Rimouski, BaiedesChaleurs, BaieComeau and SeptÎles. The City of Matane said no damage had been reported, while the CLSC Matane was briefly evacuated as a precaution before people returned inside. Seismic experts said moderate earthquakes are not common in the area, though the region records smaller tremors regularly. They noted that ancient faults along the St. Lawrence corridor can still reactivate and produce earthquakes, and said the impact depends on distance from the epicentre and local ground conditions.
