Man sentenced to 2 years for firebombing Montreal synagogue
Montreal synagogue firebombing sentence: 2 years prison, 3 years probation Court orders restitution after attack on Beth Tikvah and nearby Jewish group
A 20yearold man has been sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation after pleading guilty to firebombing Congregation Beth Tikvah in DollarddesOrmeaux, in Montreal’s West Island, and damaging a nearby Jewish community organization.
The court also ordered Mohamed Ilyess Akodad to reimburse the victims. The attack, which took place on Dec. 18, 2024, caused smoke and glass damage and left a door broken at the synagogue, while a nearby Federation CJA glass door was also smashed.
Jewish groups said the sentence acknowledges the seriousness of the crime, but urged police to keep investigating who planned and financed the attack. Akodad said he had accepted a $15,000 contract to start the fires, and his lawyer said he understood the outcome.
