British Columbia’s mining sector is pushing back against the provincial government after it extended a pause on new mineral exploration claims.
The restriction, which had been set to end this week, will now remain in place until Jan. 31, 2027. The province says it needs more time to finish landuse planning and decide where future mining and conservation activities should take place.
Industry leaders say the delay adds uncertainty for companies that are trying to plan exploration work and attract investment. The province says existing claims and projects are not affected, and that the planning process is intended to provide longterm certainty for communities, industry and First Nations.
