Investigation underway after train derailment near Montreal

Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are examining a train derailment in Repentigny, northeast of Montreal, that happened on Sunday afternoon. Canadian National Railway says 45 to 46 railcars left the tracks in the Le Gardeur sector, but no one was injured and no hazardous materials were on board. Three cars that had previously carried diesel fuel were empty at the time. Cleanup crews are clearing overturned railcars and debris, and officials say the work could take several days. More than 200 residents who were briefly evacuated have now returned home, and power has been restored after HydroQuébec cut service to the area as a precaution. Local and provincial officials said they want answers about what caused the derailment and said any safety recommendations from the investigation will be put in place as soon as possible.
