OpenAI expands journalism support with new school partnerships
OpenAI journalism initiative expands with school partnerships and AI training tools New ChatGPT Edu access helps students and faculty prepare for responsible reporting
OpenAI has announced a broader initiative to support journalism through training, partnerships, tools, and shared learning for students, educators, reporters, and newsrooms. The effort starts with new collaborations at CUNY’s Newmark JSchool and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism for the 2026–2027 academic year.
As part of the program, OpenAI is working with the TowKnight Center for Journalism Futures and Medill’s Knight Lab and will provide more than 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to graduate students and faculty at the two schools. The company says the goal is to help future journalists learn how to use AI responsibly while understanding its limits and the role of human judgment in reporting.
OpenAI said the new effort builds on earlier partnerships with journalism organizations, including the American Journalism Project, the Lenfest Institute for Journalism, WANIFRA, and INMA. The company also pointed to its OpenAI Academy for News Organizations and recent training sessions with journalism groups as part of its ongoing work with the news industry.
